The next Central Section of the Professional Wastewater Operators Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, September 21st, 2017, and hosted by the Hamby Creek WWTP in Thomasville, NC. This is an open meeting, and you do not have to be a member to attend. Everyone is welcome. There will also be a gift card given to one lucky attendee, so don’t miss out! The lunch meeting and presentation will be held at:
Loflin’s Restaurant
901 Randolph St.
Thomasville, North Carolina 27360
Technical Session
The technical session is titled, “Advanced Wastewater Treatment in an Oxidation Ditch”. Historically oxidation ditches have been known to provide reliable biological treatment of wastewater to achieve 30 / 30 effluent limits. This is no longer the case. There are numerous process options available where stringent effluent requirements can be met with advanced oxidation ditch technology. These treatment options include two and three stage systems as well as four and five stage Bardenpho systems. The ability to achieve stringent ammonia, Total Nitrogen and Phosphorus levels has been proven in hundreds of oxidation ditches across the country. This presentation will explain process selection as well as system operation, maintenance and process control.
The presentation will be made by either Tom Leland P.E. or Mike Furst P.E. of Ovivo.
Plant Tour
Hamby Creek Wastewater Treatment
Plant 110 Optimist Park Road
Thomasville, North Carolina 27361
The Hamby Creek WWTP is a six MGD Grade 4 plant that is owned and operated by the City of Thomasville. The plant achieves biological treatment through the use of an EIMCO five stage Bardenpho BNR Carrousel Oxidation System.
The influent is strained via a 3mm mechanical bar screen and degritted with a low head vortex grit removal system prior to mixing with the return activated sludge and entering the two oxidation ditches where biological treatment through aeration occurs. After exiting the stage two anoxic zone of the oxidation ditch the effluent travels through a small re- aeration zone before entering one of two secondary clarifiers for sludge separation and solids settling. Effluent from the clarifiers then passes through micron mesh mechanical disk filters for additional fine particle removal and then through an Aquionics UV disinfection system prior to discharging to Hamby Creek in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin. Waste solids are pumped to holding tanks for storage until belt pressing operations de-water the sludge before its ultimate disposal via contract hauler to the Uwharrie Environmental Landfill in Mt. Gilead NC.
