Competitions Subgroup - Annual Conference



Purpose

The Competitions Subgroup oversees all competition planning, including the Operations Challenge, Hydrant Hysteria, and Pipe Tapping events. The Competitions Coordinator provides focused leadership and direction to the subgroup and is responsible for identifying and organizing Leads for each competition event. They also update the Annual Conference Workgroup on subgroup activities during the Monthly Workgroup Meetings and relay setup and material needs to NC One Water Staff.

  

Hydrant Hysteria

 Hydrant Hysteria is a fast-paced competition that measures a team’s ability to completely assemble a commonly utilized utility hydrant as quickly and accurately as possible. Teams, comprised of no more than two (2) competitors and one (1) coach, compete head-to-head in a race against the clock for the lowest assembly time. Both men and women are eligible to compete.

 

Operations Challenge

Operations Challenge involve a series of team events that challenge the skills of participants in various wastewater related activities. These events include Collection System, Pump Maintenance, Laboratory Event, Process Control, and Safety. Ops Challenge Lead is responsible for planning the operations challenges and sourcing all materials. Recruitment of Ops Challenge teams is also an important part of this position.

The overall winners from the Operations Challenge will be eligible to compete in the National WEF competition at WEFTEC.

Equipment donations are usually needed to make the annual competition possible. A list of needed equipment is typically available in the summer before the Annual Conference. Equipment donors are recognized as sponsors of the Operations Challenge events.

 

Pipe Tapping

Pipe Tapping is a competition of skill in which teams compete for the best time in opening a cement-lined, ductile iron pipe and installing a tap. Pipe Tapping teams consist of a maximum of four people, including three workers and one coach. Winners from the NC One Water Pipe Tapping Contest will be eligible to compete in the National AWWA Contest at ACE.

Equipment donations are usually needed to make the annual competition possible. A list of needed equipment is typically available in the summer before the Annual Conference. Equipment donors are recognized as sponsors of the Pipe Tapping event.
