Automation Committee

Purpose

The Automation Committee develops, recommends, supports, and conducts continuing assessments of technologies and techniques to promote the overall understanding of the application of process instrumentation, control and automation equipment, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), telecommunications, information technologies, and the management of information in the water and wastewater environment.

The automation committee will be dedicated to issues concerning the design, manufacture, and operation of in-plant control and remote SCADA systems, and as such will focus the efforts of NC One Water in these vital areas. It is intended to parallel the missions of the AWWA Instrumentation and Control Committee and the WEF Automation and Information Technology Committee at the national level. Topics that the Automation Committee proposes to cover include:

  • Instrumentation and control devices
  • PLC, DCS, and PC based control systems
  • Instrument and control device networks
  • Plant control and SCADA-related software
  • Control panels, motor controllers, variable frequency drives (AC), variable speed drives (DC) and final control elements
  • The IT interface to plant control and SCADA systems
  • Networks and wireless communication relating to automation systems
  • Security systems for treatment, storage and pumping facilities
