Public Education Workgroup

Purpose

The purpose of the NC One Water Public Education Workgroup (PEW) is to foster within the future generation of North Carolinians a deeper understanding of the value of clean water - from its natural source, through treatment and distribution, and back to the environment. The PEW is comprised of passionate water professionals across North Carolina who are dedicated to enhancing public awareness and appreciation of water resources and the water environment. We believe that inspiring the next generation is key to not only building a sustainable future, but also ensuring that the pipeline of future engineers remains full. Our youth engagement initiatives are designed to spark curiosity, promote STEM learning, and encourage careers in water-related fields among K-12 students.

Key Programs:

  • Model Water Tower Competition: Students design and build functioning water towers, learning about engineering principles, water storage, and distribution. This hands-on challenge promotes teamwork and problem-solving.
  • National Drinking Water Week Poster Contest: Held annually, this contest invites students to create artwork that celebrates the importance of clean drinking water. Winning entries are showcased statewide.
  • Science Fair Judging: Committee members serve as guest judges at regional and state science fairs, recognizing projects that demonstrate innovation and relevance to water and environmental sciences.
  • Stockholm Junior Water Prize Sponsorship: We identify and support promising student researchers to compete for this prestigious award, which honors outstanding water-related science projects, and sponsor the State level winner’s attendance at the National Competition.
