The next Central Section of the Professional Wastewater Operators Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, and hosted by Morinaga America Foods, Inc. Pretreatment Facility. This is an open meeting, and you do not have to be a member to attend. Everyone is welcome. There will also be a gift card given to one lucky attendee, so don’t miss out! The lunch meeting and presentation will be held at:
The Mebane Arts and Community Center

Mebane, North Carolina 27302
Lunch will be provided, please RSVP by Monday 12/4/2017
Technical Session
The technical session will discuss the activated sludge technology which includes submerged membranes that provide liquid/biosolids separation instead of gravity clarification which results in excellent effluent quality provided within a compact footprint. The near-absolute barrier to suspended solids provided by the submerged membranes allows for operation at much higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations (typically 8,000 – 15,000 mg/l versus 2,000 – 4,000 mg/l in conventional activated sludge systems), resulting in a more robust, ultra-compact treatment system. In addition, the higher biomass inventory in the system provides resilience to changes in influent quality and can reduce the amount of waste sludge that is produced and must be disposed. The use of membranes eliminates potential problems with sludge settling and separation, such as hydraulic washout, growth of filamentous organisms and bulking sludge, and pin floc which often result in poor effluent quality for conventional aerobic treatment systems.
The presentation will be made by Lindsay Efland, Facilities and Production Manager, Morinaga America Foods, Inc.
Plant Tour

Plant Description
The Pretreatment Facility treats a confectionery blend of water, sugars, and vegetable oil, from equipment wash downs and production processes. We normally treat 6000-8000 gal/day with a max capacity of 20000 gal/day for this type system. Nutrient levels and pH balance are the 2 major control points needed to maintain consistent system operation and pre-treatment of water. The output from system averages less than 5 mg/l for TSS. The entire system is automated and requires only daily monitoring for 24/7 operations.
Program Schedule
Lunch: 11:30 – 12:30
Technical Session: 12:30 – 1:30
Plant Tours: 1:45 – 2:45
Two contact hours for wastewater operators will be awarded to those attendees who participate in the Technical Session and the Tour (partial credit will not be given).
