Plant Tour The NCWRF is a 12MGD facility that treats waste using Biological Nutrient Removal. Originally constructed in 1984 with a capacity of 4MGD, the plant has been upgraded over the years as population in Northern Cary has steadily increased. The latest upgrade, completed in 2022, replaced inefficient mechanical aerators with fine bubble diffused aeration and introduced a Kruger BioDenipho Phased Isolation Ditch treatment optimized with real time analytical data to further improve nutrient removal with reduced power consumption. After treatment and UV disinfection, the effluent is discharged into Crabtree Creek, a tributary of the Neuse RiverThe
WWTF has a capacity of 4.8 MGD. The liquid stream treatment process includes influent
pumping, screening, grit removal, activated sludge system, secondary clarifiers, tertiary
filtration, and UV disinfection. Treated wastewater is discharged into Mud Creek.
Sludge produced by the treatment process is thickened, dewatered, and hauled offsite
for final disposal.
