Solids Handling Design of Nereda Aerobic Granular Sludge

Lara Grotz and Bryce Figdore, HDR

Approved for 1.0 credit hour for Water, Wastewater, and PE

Webinar Description:

The Town of Wilkesboro (Town) is a community of approximately 3,500 people in western North Carolina and currently has a 4.9 MGD conventional activated sludge facility. The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is in a floodplain and requires both a capacity and process upgrade to meet future flows and permit limits in the High Rock Lake River Basin. Through an extensive criteria selection and preliminary engineering process, the Town selected to upgrade the conventional activated sludge facility to the Nereda ® Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) process. A significant part of this upgrade includes expanding their solids treatment and dewatering system which will include sludge buffering, aerobic digestion, disc thickening, and dewatering. The existing solids system is effectively designed to dewater conventional activated sludge, but significant improvements are required to treat the expanded solids production from the expansion. Additionally, data on full-scale AGS solids handling and dewatering considerations are limited in literature and in practice but is vital to engineer and design for the solids system upgrade at the WWTP. This presentation therefore will introduce the Town of Wilkesboro Cub Creek WWTP solids treatment system and relevant design considerations. Further, this presentation will present a collection of results addressing Nereda digestion and dewatering performance from bench and full-scale studies with the goal of elucidating sludge management strategies from the AGS process.
