We are very pleased to announce the next meeting of the Western Professional Wastewater Operators Committee will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023. This meeting will be hosted by the Metropolitan Sewerage District/MSD Pretreatment. It will begin with lunch and presentation, with the tour of the New Belgium Brewing Plant following.

11:00am-12:30pm: Lunch and presentation at the MSD Training Center (still old sign that says “Buncombe Partnership for Children”

The MSD Training Center is located at 2229 Riverside Drive Asheville, NC 28804. The presentation will be given by Shannon Bergeron, discussing the brewing process and how a Brewery affects a Wastewater Treatment Plant. She will be giving the average BOD and TSS numbers before and after the side streaming.

1:00pm-3:00pm: The tour will be at the New Belgium Brewing Facility

The facility is located at 21 Craven Street, Asheville, NC 28806.     At the brewery you will see the brewing process including what is side streamed, canning, bottling, and packaging operations.  Then we will tour their wastewater treatment area which has an anaerobic digester, a membrane filtration system, rotary drum screen, pH neutralization, equalization tank, and a centrifuge for solids removal.  They also have a small lab and an interesting SCADA system. 

NOTE: Since there is a lot to see within the Brewery, the tour may take up to 2 hours to be able to see all the process. There will also be optional tasting event following tour for those who want to participate, this is not required for full credit and not sponsored by NCOW.

Operators who have certifications issued by the WPCSOCC will receive 2 contact hours toward their continuing education requirement if they attend both the technical session and the plant tour.
