Description: We are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Central Professional Wastewater Operators Committee will be held on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023. This meeting will be hosted by Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA). It will begin with lunch provided by OWASA and a presentation given by Tom Nangle with Brown and Caldwell followed by a tour of the Mason Farm WWTP. Note: The location of the lunch/presentation is different than the tour. Further details are provided below:
11:00am – 12:15pm: Lunch and Presentation (Community Room)

Tom Nangle, Solids Process Engineering National Specialty Leader, will be speaking on the benefits of utilizing fermentation to improve wastewater treatment processes. Lunch will be provided by OWASA.
12:30pm – 1:30pm: Tour of Mason Farm WWTP
Location: 170 Old Mason Farm Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27517
The Mason Farm WWTP is a 14.5 MGD facility that discharges into Morgan Creek in the Upper Cape Fear River Basin. The system is composed of primary clarification, step-feed configuration for nutrient removal, filtration, and UV disinfection with a 3 MGD reclaimed water system onsite. The treatment plant produces Class A biosolids through anaerobic digestion and operates a land application program with over 1,000 acres enrolled.
Recently, OWASA has rehabbed their fermenter tank and is currently studying the benefits of this process change and its effects on the treatment plant. Operators who have certifications issued by the WPCSOCC will receive 2 contact hours toward
their continuing education requirement if they attend both the technical session and the plant tour.
