Charlotte GROW: Yadkin River Water Treatment Plant Tour

3522 New Salem Road Monroe, NC 28110

April 19, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Description:

Prior to the Yadkin Regional Water Supply Project, Union County had been relying on the Catawba River basin (located outside of the county’s boundaries) as the primary source of its water. To meet the high water demand from the rapidly growing population, Union County needed to secure a more reliable and sustainable water supply for its residents. In 2013, Union County started partnering with the Town of Norwood on a $260 million project to construct the following components:

  • Water intake and pump station on Lake Tillery in Norwood;
  • 30 miles of transmission pipeline to carry water from its source to the treatment plant;
  • 12.6 MGD water treatment facility located on New Salem Road in Union County;
  • 10 miles of drinking water pipeline to distribute water to the residents.

Construction for this project has been recently completed with a celebration event at the treatment plant in August, 2023. NC One Water – Charlotte Regional Group invites you to join us on a tour to follow the plant’s superintendent around the treatment facility and learn more about the project history, engineering process, obstacles during construction, challenges during start-up, and any other related topics.
