Description:

Please join us for two presentations from our guest speakers:

  • Hydraulic Design: From the Classic Equations to New Innovations by Lucas Bennett (Hazen)
The basic principles of hydraulics have been around for more than century, such as Manning’s equation or the Bernoulli principle, and they continue to be a critical aspect of water and wastewater infrastructure. Simultaneously, new innovations are developing how we apply the basic principles, which allows for more efficient and effective conveyance and treatment systems. As we move into the future, it is important to maintain a good understanding of the fundamentals of hydraulics, while also continuing to learn about and implementing new innovations such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Machine Learning, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.

  • Preparing the Future Water Workforce by Steven Brown HDR
Public water utilities face particular challenges to building and developing the talented and committed workforce needed to ensure successful operations, including increasing demands of environmental regulations, economic forces impacting the ability to deliver services cost-effectively, the loss of experienced professionals and fewer people entering public service, as well as the changing expectations of the employer-employee relationship. The water utility sector can build a strategic, holistic, compelling vision for its workforce and thrive in today’s work environment by adopting a practice of continuous improvement by implementing a Cycle of Successful Workforce Development. This cycle includes five stages: assessment, planning, application, measurement, and learning. In each stage, utility leadership can take tangible, actionable steps to enhance workforce development.
