The next meeting of the Eastern Professional Wastewater Operators Committee will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015.  This meeting will be hosted by the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.  It will begin with lunch provided by McKim & Creed and Hazen & Sawyer at the Carolina BBQ, 1602 South College Road in Wilmington followed by a tour of the Authority’s M’Kean Maffitt (Southside) Wastewater Treatment Plant led by ORC Milton Vann and his staff.

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM    Lunch and presentation at the Carolina BBQ, 1602 South College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403.  Bryan Blake with McKim & Creed, David Nailor with Hazen & Sawyer, and Milton Vann, SSWWTP ORC will be presenting.  The SSWWTP began operation in 1972 as a 6 MGD trickling filter secondary facility, It was later expanded and upgraded to a 12 MGD trickling filter/activated sludge secondary facility.  The current plant, the oldest sections of which are about 43 years old, includes screening, grit removal, primary clarification, trickling filtration, activated sludge, secondary clarification, chlorination, and sodium bisulfite de-chlorination prior to discharge to the Cape Fear River, gravity belt WAS thickening, anaerobic digestion, belt filter press dewatering, and contract land application of Class B residuals from four CFPUA plants (NSWWTP; SSWWTP; WHWWTP; SWTP).  Service area growth and new regulations have necessitated plans for expanding capacity and upgrading the level of treatment.  The existing plant is planned for phased expansion from 12 to 16 to 20 to 24 MGD while the secondary level of treatment will be upgraded to an advanced level of treatment.

12:30 PM – 2:00 PM        Tour of the CFPUA SSWWTP

The CFPUA SSWWTP is located at 3436 River Road, Wilmington, NC 28412.  From the restaurant, turn right onto South College Road; stay in the right lane, and at the second traffic light make a right onto Shipyard Boulevard.  Take Shipyard Boulevard as far as you can go (about 3.5 miles) where it ends at the entrance to the State Port and make a left onto River Road.  Take River Road until you see the plant on your right (about 2.5 miles).  Turn right into the plant and park where directed around the low brick admin building on your right.
