The next Central Section of the Professional Wastewater Operators Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2015, and hosted by the Town of Hillsborough. This is an open meeting, and you do not have to be a member to attend.  Everyone is welcome.  There will also be a gift card given to one lucky attendee, so don’t miss out.

Jeff Mahagan, ORC of the Hillsborough WWTP, will present on the in-house process modifications and the unique process control strategies that were implemented to produce incredibly low Nitrogen numbers.

The Town of Hillsborough WWTP completed a major plant upgrade in July 2014.  Upgrades include: complete replacement of the electrical distribution and controls, new preliminary treatment, modification of existing treatment basins to a 5-stage BNR from a 2-stage BNR, new denitrifying tertiary filters, new solids handling and processing, and a new back-up power generator.  The upgrade was in response to the new Falls Lake Rules nutrient reduction requirements that may be the most stringent in the nation.  Since the completion of the upgrade, the plant has discharged averages of 0.49 mg/L NO3-NO2, 1.3 mg/L Total Nitrogen, and 0.73 mg/L Total Phosphorous.  These results are all from biological treatment with no chemical addition.   

Operators who have certifications issued by the WPCSOCC will receive 2.0 contact hours toward their continuing education requirement if they attend both the technical session and the plant tour. CE #01100602
