The Catawba River Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) is located within the City of Morganton in Burke County, North Carolina. The WPCF is owned and operated by the City and treats wastewater generated within the service area. The WPCF has a current permitted capacity of 8.1 MGD with secondary limits.
The existing process, as upgraded in 2013-2014 consists of two multiple- rack bar screens, influent pumping, vortex type grit removal, primary clarification, liquid oxygen activated sludge basins, a flow equalization basin, secondary clarifiers, return activated sludge (RAS) pumping, chlorine contact basins, dechlorination with sodium bisulfite, and discharge to the Catawba River.
The solids handling consists of primary sludge pumping and storage, waste activated sludge (WAS) pumping to an aerated holding tank, blending of these sludges, dewatering with centrifuges, and composting.
The technical session will present upgrades recently completed and currently underway at the Catawba River Water Pollution Control Facility. This facility utilizes pure oxygen for its secondary processes. Earlier this year, the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system used in this process became inoperable and damaged to a point that repair was no longer a feasible option. Liquid oxygen was utilized on a temporary basis while fast track interim aeration improvements were made. This presentation will cover an overview of the plant, the design and implementation of the interim aeration improvements, results of the recently completed process conversion study, and planned plant improvements. Robert Vinay, P.E., with Freese and Nichols will present.
Two contact hours for wastewater operators will be awarded to those attendees who participate in the Technical Session and the Tour (partial credit cannot be given). Please call Clark Fields at (828) 301-7255 or Robin Deal at (317) 850-6971 with any questions.
