Plant Tour

1646 West Andrews Avenue

Henderson, NC

The City of Henderson Water Reclamation Facility started out with two trickling filter plants on the opposite sides of the City, which are in two different river basins (Tar Pamlico and Roanoke).  The plant had an automatic barscreen, grit chamber with auger, six primary clarifiers, four two stage trickling filters, six secondary clarifiers, a pure oxygen activated sludge tank, four final clarifiers, four tertiary filters, a chlorine contact tank, and a post aeration tank.  The alkalinity for nitrification came from slaking lime in a lime tower.  All of the sludge was blended and thickened in a dissolve air flotation thickener and sent to a pure oxygen digester and then a two stage anaerobic digestion before being pumped to drying beds.  This plant had an incredible amount of equipment which made it very expensive to operate. We replaced most of the plant equipment in the past three years and concentrated on process simplification, reduction of the amount of equipment and nutrient removal.
