The First Broad River Wastewater Treatment Plant is a 6 MGD facility that uses an activated sludge process. With an average daily flow of 3.36 million gallons per day, the plant utilizes bar screens, primary clarifiers, an aeration basin, secondary clarifiers and concludes with disinfection and discharge into the First Broad River.
Solids are pumped into a holding tank where they are held until processed through a compost facility, where the solids are combined with bark mulch and treated for over 30 days. Approximately 1,200 tons of Class A/EQ (excellent quality) product is produced annually using storm debris (trees, limbs, etc.) and sludge. This process eliminates approximately 800 tons of debris taking up landfill space.
The First Broad River WWTP serves over 8,000 residential, commercial and industrial users with a staff of 14. The plant is one of the few wastewater plants in North Carolina that is ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certified.

The presentation will discuss process control of nitrogen removal. Jeff Mahagan, wastewater plant superintendent for the Town of Hillsborough will present.
