The Smithfield – Tar Heel Plant is the largest Hog Processing Facility in the world – harvesting up to 34,000 head of hogs a day. The plant initially processes its waste stream through a Pretreatment Unit consisting of Rotoscreens, chemical coagulation, Dissolved Air Flotation, and a centrifuge which separates out both solids and brown grease. From there, the waste stream is biologically treated with Anaerobic Lagoons, a Biogas system that utilizes the methane produced in the Anaerobic process for firing 3 boilers to provide steam to the production facility, Aeration basins, Anoxic basins for biological nitrogen removal, Secondary Clarifiers, a 2 MGD Reuse System which further processes clarifier effluent for Reuse within non-product areas of the plant, another Dissolved Air Flotation unit to further reduce solids, “Fuzzy” Filtration, and concludes with a dual disinfection UV Light and Chlor/Dechlor combination prior to being discharged at a rate of up to 3 MGD (monthly average) to the Cape Fear River. A 90,000,000 Effluent Storage Basin can alternately be discharged to in the event of questionable effluent quality, and later reintroduced to the main plant for eventual discharge. The plant is ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certified.
The presentation is “When Things Go Wrong” and will discuss getting through treatment issues. Tim Weaver from Smithfield – Tar Heel will present.
DON’T miss an opportunity to network, learn, and assist other operators.
Operators who have certifications issued by the WPCSOCC will receive 2 contact hours toward their continuing education requirement if they attend both the technical session and the plant tour.
If you have any questions please contact Jimmy Pridgen at (252) 205-2519 or jpridgen@wilsonnc.org.
The Bladen Buffs SWTP is about 1.2 miles north of the Smithfield Food facility. If approaching from Fayetteville, you will need to go past the Bladen Buffs SWTP and make a U-turn at the crossing near the C.R. England Trucking facility.
